Posted: Mon May 30, 2005 Post subject: ActiveX Problem |
|
|
This just started recently, but I have found that Adblock is not only causing my computer to give me random pop-up messages that tell me that ActiveX is performing an illegal operation (generally when I visit sites with flash on them), but it's also crashing firefox.
I love Adblock and hate the fact that I had to disable it. Is there a way to still have adblock installed but not get the bugs, ie. an older version or some work-around?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Are you sure it's Adblock-related? Firefox has no built-in support for ActiveX. |

Yeah, it only happens when adblock is on. I've tested to see if any other extensions were acting up, but only adblock is.
Is it possible that I may have blocked something that would cause this kind of an error? |

Can't tell, I've never seen this error. Can you give me a specific URL to test? |

this might happen if:
you have an activeX plugin for mozilla installed AND OBJ-TABS in AdBlock is enabled
possible solution(s)
1. remove activeX plugin
2. Disable OBJ-TABS in AdBlock |

I don't have the activeX plugin (at least, I never installed one...), and I'll check to see what I can do with the OBJ-TABS in Adblock just to be sure.
As for a specific url...I suppose newgrounds, or ugoto.com...I'm going to turn on adblock in a second to mess with the options, I'll tell you then.
Edit: Disabling OBJ-TABS did the trick. Thank you for your help!
Now, down to business, what did I just do?

Type about:plugins into the address bar ? to see if it's installed. _________________ • Latest Adblock!

It also seems that I have the Mozilla ActiveX plugins installed, but I never would have installed those myself...
"Mozilla ActiveX control and plugin support
File name: npmozax.dll
Mozilla ActiveX control and plugin module
MIME Type.....................Description.....Suffixes..Enabled
application/x-oleobject....ActiveX..........*.ocx......Yes
application/oleobject.......ActiveX..........*.ocx......Yes"
^^Just for reference, to make sure I'm reading that correctly.
Alright, will someone tell me what I should do? Should I just leave adblock with the OBJ-TABS disabled? Should I uninstall ActiveX and, if so, what will that do to my computer? |

Just leave Obj-Tabs disabled and use Flash Overlay (ctrl+shift+f) when you need to block Flash ads. _________________ Adblock 0.5.3.042

Close Firefox, and simply delete the file "npmozax.dll" from the "plugins" subfolder in your Firefox installation. |

Should I leave OBJ-TABS off after that, or turn them back on? |

My advice is to leave them off, even if they weren't the cause. They're ugly, they cause major problems on several sites and you can do without them - just use "Overlay Flash" instead. |
