Does adblock stop the actual download of the content that it filters or does it just prevent the presentation??

so for instance say i set up the filter for http://cnn.com/images/*

will it prevent the downloads of anything from http://cnn.com/images/* or will it download and just not present the images?

That's up to you actually. If you go to Tools > Options > Adblock you can switch between Remove Ads and Hide Ads. The former blocks the download, the latter downloads and hides.
