What's the trick? after installing my old one, I tried to install from the main mozilla site

http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/more-info/adblock

and I get a download error.

Try installing from the Adblock homepage:
http://adblock.mozdev.org/dev.html

Or from Mozilla Update:
https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=10

You should also go to Tools > Options > Web Features and make sure that Allow web sites to install software is enabled.
