Dear Forum users,
For a long time there have been loads of threads asking for a whitelist, safelist, exclusion list... the feature that allows to exclude some content from Adblock's ruthless blocking might.
This feature is supposed to be in the upcoming 0.6 Adblock version, but as it's release date is unknown, some great people finally took up the job and created the long awaited Ghastly Whitelist Hack - now known as Adblock Plus!
It's original thread is here. I felt that due to it's strange title and first post it's not getting the attention it deserves.
bene hosts a page featuring OneStop's and mcm_ham's work. This page has the latest version of all three versions of the enhanced Adblock, available here: http://www.sitesled.com/members/bene/install.htm . You might as well add this page to you favourites 
Adblock Plus has several most interesting and useful features, all listed in the changelog: http://mcmblog.homedns.org/Firefox/changelog.txt
In addition, you may download 3 editions: one features the traditional Adblock text, one comes with an icon, and the third has a toolbar button.
Try one of these slick new versions now, and two thumbs up for OneStop, mcm_ham and bene!

After all, they have developed this wonderful extension!!!
It's undeniable though, that OneStop, mcm_ham and bene managed to get the Ghastly Whitelist Hack together in a couple of days, and it covers the most anticipated features of 0.6 - that has been in development for months.
(Note for self: hmm... this unexpected "competitor" might get rue and wonko to dish out 0.6 sooner, though  )

I really hope that this hack does little to increase pressure on the core dev team. Getting involved in this, my hope was to decrease the pressure on them, while allowing users to access some new features.
Actually, I got involved 'cause the hack allowed me to access the Runescape site more easily.
Adblock is a heckuva useful extension, and the original Adblock crew has nothing but respect from me. The newer contributors (OneStop, mcm_ham, Zockman et al) are also held in my highest esteem, as they've managed to squeeze out much more than I ever though to expect!
Anyways, good times for now!

This something like a new version of Adblock. So just install on top of it.

Well, it installs and works on latest nightly but I get errors on the JS console. In fact, with a clean profile, I got AdBlock and all my extensions to install... (Just ChatZilla won't with my old profile... more testing now!)

| I wouldn't worry, when AdBlock 0.6 is finally released all the complaining will have been forgotten about and instead there will be praise. Full credit goes to the developers of AdBlock for what they've already done. Without that this "new" version wouldn't even exist. At least if this introduces whitelisting, the number one request, hopefully the pressure is off the developers so they can make the next version perfect. |

Really! And you have proof of this? So you can show us what has been done so far in the official version? Like a beta of somekind, because the unofficial devs got whitelisting done in this short period of time, so the official adblock devs must be way further in development than that, right?
Or don't you have any proof of anything being done? Is all you have is loyality to the official devs? Is that the only reason you are trying to defend them? Because if there is another reason then please explain.
Oh BTW, just saying that you have seen their progress isn't proof |

I was aware of that problem and it affects the official version as well. AdBlock seems to use code to overlay information into the extension manager and it is that which is throwing the error. Since it's not needed I've removed that now so it should no longer throw that error in the next version.

Sorry, I removed the old installation scripts since Firefox no longer uses them forgetting that Mozilla still does. I have put them back in and finally got it to work with the new locales. Except there is a bug in Mozilla which means that only the en-US locale is loaded not matter what locale you've set Mozilla to.

People have been wanting to use whitelisting to allow all ads through on an entire site rather then testing individual ads whether it's whitelisted or not. This has been dubbed Site Whitelisting and is now an option under Adblock's menu. Will be available in the next release.

Can you whitelist a site but still have the ads hidden (just for that site)?
Example: I don't want any ads to download except for environmentalchemistry.com. On that site, I want the ads to download but not show. |

| Probably not because if you try to hide ads globally which basically does the same for what you are asking except for all sites. That site is still able to detect that Adblock is hiding the adverts. |

No, that site can only detect if you don't download the ads, not if you are hiding the ads. I don't want ads to download for any sites except for that site. On that site, the ads most download for the site to work. But I still want to HIDE the ads on that site. |

| Your probably right and when I have time I'll look through the code to see what is actually happening. But I've always been under the impression from a number of posts I've read on this forum that the hide ads option does in fact download ads but just doesn't display them. It's the remove ads option which prevents it from being downloaded in the first place. If that's not the case what does the hide/remove ads option actually do? |

I want to hide ads for one site.
I want to remove ads for all other sites.
In other words, I want to control whether adblock 1) removes or 2) hides the ads on a site by site basis. |

I've looked more into the code and I'm pretty sure the Hide Ads option does mean the ads get downloaded supporting the webiste rather than Remove Ads where it doesn't. I can understand the request for it to be on a site by site basis and should be relatively easy to do. It's most a UI exercise.

Ad Muncher is able to whitelist an entire site as well as having the ability to override a specific ad.
(It's had this ability forever I might add)

Ok support for hiding ads on a per site basis has now been added to the developer builds and will be available on the next release. Thus concludes the features I plan to add to Adblock Plus. For any others you will have to wait for the next official release. I plan on only doing bug fixes from now on with Adblock Plus.

| Recently I combined the three versions into one and where you specify the version you want is where the hide ads option used to be. Instead I have moved it to the "Adblock Options" menu and renamed it to "Support Websites..". |

There is a preference called "Collapse Blocked Elements" under Adblock's Options menu. This only works if you are not using the hide ads feature. The original Adblock seems to do this intentionally and I'm not too sure why. If this is not the issue then can you give an example page and filter you use.
If you are blocking DIVs then you were probably in the "Ad-Blockable Items" panel which can be opened by left clicking on the Adblock text/icon on the bottom of the browser. When you select a link the corresponding element has a box around it that blinks red. So I'm guessing the DIV you blocked was highlighting the entire page. |

I cant seem to get it working.. http://www.download.com/ theres these annoying grey boxes in every window at the top I've tried RIP, greasemonkey and others to get rid of those things only successful on the the front page, everyother page i try it misses up. Others say they dont see it, but i do what am I doing wrong? there is this annoying pop up aswell that says "blocked by site blocking" when i click anything with the word ad, so i put @@download.com now it's not blocked.. but the ads are back. I miss the silent blocking it seemed not to block everything |

So you do have it set to "remove ads" and not "hide ads? Instead of putting the "@@download.com" filter you can just disable "Site Blocking" from Adblock's Options menu. You can also try the development build linked here. It will tell you what filter matches the site URL, since if it is blocking anything containing ad it doesn't sound like a good filter and needs modification. You can quote it here if you need help.
If you still have problems, try closing Firefox and type firefox -profilemanager into the run box under start menu. Create a new profile and start using that, you will need to install Adblock Plus again. If it doesn't help then you can use the same procedure to go back to your old profile but if it does then follow this post about transferring your settings accross.

Is the icon red? If so try downloading the developer builds again. It should be white as that means that it is working, it should no different to what it was like before with the icon version installed. You might need to uninstall what's before installing the developer build. |

maybe you want to ask that at the Adblock Plus Discussion Forum, since that is where people discuss the Plus version now
anyway, the short answer is
1. install adblock plus
2. put @@ in front of a filter to signify it's whitelistiness
