on my 150MHz Celeron, it ADDS about 10 seconds on medium sized pages.

Linux 'top' shows firebird 90% cpu

Maybe your REGEX engine needs tweaking?

Wow- on multiple counts. How long is pageload for you, normally?
.
Currently: Adblock uses standard RegExp objects, sequentially testing your entire filter-list against each blockable element. There's no optomization possible here. String-matching simply has penalties attached, and your pentium-I-era CPU is taking a hit.
.
Coming: Adblock will allow filter grouping -- per-site, or global -- as well as whitelisted sites, for which content isn't filtered.
