I'm sure this question has been asked before (no, its not in the Adblock FAQ)
what is the difference between Adblock and Adblock Plus?

As an outsider who has just walked in, I want to use *one* of these extensions but am a bit baffled which way to jump? They appear to be two different extrensions, which is a bit fishy...

(Adblock Plus site makes some passing reference to Adblock not being maintained, but I'm not sure if this is just a breakaway group perspective...)

Lastly, can I use Filterset.G both with Adblock and/or Adblock plus?

Thanks for any comments.

Adblock is the original extension, Adblock Plus is a modification of the original.

The developers of both extensions overlap a bit.

Adblock has picked up some of plus's features over the months.

Yes, you can use Filterset.g (and the Filterset.G Updater) with either extension.

Both extensions are actively being developed -- usually the original Adblock is not updated until just before official updates to mozilla or firefox, while plus is usually updated to work with nightlies (and betas) pretty early on.

My preference is the original adblock, but I have used plus from time to time without any problems.

I have this preference because I don't use the other features -- I pretty much just install Adblock and then leave it alone (with the auto updates), 'cause it blocks enough ads for me this way.

there's one more difference:
adblock plus is updated more regularly then adblock original.

going by past precedent, when firefox 2.0 is released, adblockplus would already be compatible on release date, but adblock would take days if not weeks before a compatible version is released.

There is also another difference. I filed a bug on a critical security vulnerability in Adblock 0.5.3.42 on 2006-05-16. As expected there was no reaction whatsoever from rue (I wonder whether he even bothers to read bug mail from bugzilla.mozilla.org). The solution is trivial and if this were about Adblock Plus I would have brought out an update in a matter of days if not hours (this happened for critical bugs a few times before though I never had to do it because of security issues). A while back rue claimed to read this forum even though he doesn't answer - so if this is the case (which I don't believe) he should finally read bug 338114.
