Is it possible to change the apearance of the obj-tabs so they are smaller, more transparent or just less crummy looking?
if not, will this be a feature in the future?

You could disable obj-tabs from Adblock preferences and use 'Ctrl-Shift-F + left click ' to create rules for flash ads.

Instead, could obj-tabs be turned off by default? I suspect many users find them too invasive and Tools > Adblock > Overlay Flash is only slightly less convenient; i.e. the annoyance outweighs the convenience.
