I am so darn impressed with the new (0.5) adblock that I'm probably letting my enthusiasm get the better of me. But since the developer page mentions that you're considering some sort of bayesian algorithms for ad filtering in future versions, I thought this might even be able to tackle those annoying text/html ads, the only sort of ads I'm still able to see.
The way I picture it, the text would just be removed from the web page, along with fill-in form boxes and submit buttons. The way I picture the interface, you could highlight the text ad, right-click, choose the ad-block submenu, and say "block this text advertisement". Then the Bayesian functions could look for some common features of all text ads. Because guessing something to be a text ad is dangerous, since it might remove content, you could have a little "T" next to the Adblock link in the bottom toolbar whenever Adblock takes the initiative to block a text ad. Double-clicking that T would unblock that text.
Anyway, the Bayesian algo would certainly benefit if a whole bunch of people on the internet would swap each others' blocking algorithms.
Yeah, maybe too ambitious, but this sort of cooperative system might be useful for graphical ad blocking too. |
