I've had similar probs, I think it depends what you remove when you deinstall.

Although its a pain sometimes the only way to get back to a clean system is
a) for Adblock installed in user profile
1. delete XUL cache (XUL.mfl in windows)
2. find /chrome folder, delete entire /chrome/overlayinfo/ tree
3. delete /chrome/adblock.jar
b) for adblock installed in moz folder
1. find the line(s) in /installed-chrome.txt referring to adblock ond delete them.
2 delete chrome.rdf and adblock.jar
3. delete XUL cache in user profile (see above)

This is a pain because you almost always lose any other extensions installed in your user profile, but sometimes it seems to be the only way

Can each of you clarify what's meant by 'deinstall': manual or automated removal?
.
If you're manually removing extensions, then yes- be careful. Per John's instructions, you also need to remove the overlayinfo directory if installed to root.
.
However, if another extension's removal-routine is bothering Adblock, then contact that extension's author and let him know.
