firefox 1.5 (and higher) has much better built-in popup blocking abilities than the 1.0.x line

Adblock can only block embedded objects (images, flash, javascript, etc...) -- and therefore can't do what you want.

I'm not sure if the Plus version is able to do what you want.

It is strange to hear that a site could affect Adbock's (or even Firefox's) settings. This is the first I've heard of this happening.

but there is a part of the autoupdate extension that lets you specify a list of filters that remain, even if the autoupdate list changes ...
